High School Week #5 National Top 25 Rankings

With Columbus Day Weekend falling in the middle of Week #5, there were some great out of state and cross-regional match-ups that took place this week.  Here are some of the highlights.

Eastern Regional (NJ) came out on top of their big match-ups this weekend.  They defeated Wyoming Seminary (PA) 2-1 and Sacred Heart Academy (KY) 5-0, earning them a bump up to the #7 spot.  In that same series, Wyoming Seminary defeated Sacred Heart 1-0 and Sacred Heart defeated Ocean City (NJ) 3-2.  Wyoming Seminary capped off a competitive week with a 2-1 overtime victory over Wyoming Valley West (PA) on Monday, earning them a bump up to the #19 spot.

In Virginia Beach, Assumption (KY) put on a strong showing against top-ranked Mid-Atlantic teams Norfolk Academy (VA), First Colonial (VA), and Frank W Cox (VA), but wasn’t able to edge out a win, losing each of those games by one goal.  They did defeat Princess Anne (VA) 6-1 on the trip.  They hold their #2 spot in the West/Mid-West Region but miss out on the National Top 25 this week.

In an Ohio vs Michigan match-up, Thomas Worthington (OH) edged out Pioneer (MI) in overtime 1-0.

In a Delaware vs Pennsylvania match-up, Tower Hill School (DE) edged out Episcopal Academy (PA) in overtime 3-2.

In a match-up of the top two squads in the Northeast Region, New York State and Section I, Lakeland (NY) edged out Mamaroneck (NY) 4-2 in a back and forth battle that Lakeland was able to pull away in.  Mamaroneck was the first team to score on the Hornets all season through 12 games.

We have three newcomers to this week’s National Top 25 Rankings, and all three teams hail from the Mid-Atlantic Region.  Frank W. Cox (VA) returns to the Top 25 at #23.  The Falcons are now 9-1 with their lone loss coming in the first game of the season against #4 Norfolk Academy.  Reigning Delaware State Champs Delmar High School enter at #24.  The Wildcats are now 8-0 and dominating in state competition and the Maryland squads they have played, including two strong Anne Arundel County opponents in South River High School (MD) who they beat 4-0, and Chesapeake High School (MD) who they beat 6-0.  Notre Dame Prep (MD) enters at the final spot, #25, as the top squad in the state of Maryland with an 11-0 record and several quality wins on their resume, including convincing wins over C Milton Wright (MD), Garrison Forest School (MD), Archbishop Spalding (MD) and McDonogh School (MD).

A note about rankings and our methodology:

Each week, we compile schedules/scores on over 100 teams to put together our Regional and National Rankings.  This can take 1-2 days in itself.  Unfortunately, we are also quite often going on incomplete information due to the lack of field hockey coverage in many areas of the country.  Some teams/conferences don’t have schedules/scores online, some are not kept up-to-date.  There are coaches (and fans) we literally email one by one every week for score updates.  Due to this lack of complete information and exhaustive process of keeping up with results for so many schools, states and regions, it is very difficult for us to know of every team out there that should be considered.

This is why we are ALWAYS looking for feedback and new teams to consider.  While it may seem like sometimes the same old teams are in the mix, that may be very true given our process.  Help us broaden our lists!  We do receive a good amount of feedback and we read and consider each and every email we receive.  That does not necessarily mean the suggested team makes it onto the rankings that week, but we do take a look at their resume and evaluate their results and strength of schedule.  We add all recommended teams to our personal “keep and eye on” list, which is the list of teams we follow each week that we think are close to making it into the rankings (beyond the “Others Considered” list of teams).
